Results of Arts Integration

“Several important strands are woven through this experience. Most important are the many avenues for students to become interested in and active in their school activities. Arts Integration makes many things possible. It creates a bridge between professionals (teachers and artists) and between professionals and students.  Because they are working towards a common goal, rooted in curriculum instruction, they all know the expected outcomes and use all media at their disposal to reach them.  Once connected, through the curriculum, they move forward, together, discovering news ways of understanding and presentation. Also important, we think, is the model of teacher professional development represented by the SAAA program. Teachers commented that having the professional development experience right in their classroom for a few weeks at a time, over a three year period, was unlike anything they had experienced before as teachers and was much more influential to their teaching than the typical training they had been given.”

Research Interviews

Completed Spring 2011 (The final semester of the 3-Year Grant Project)

Perceived Value:

At the end of each conversation, I asked teachers to give a Likert-scaled response to the value of the arts in their teaching before, during, and after the SAAA program, reflecting change that they saw or predicted over time, on a scale of 1-10.

This chart shows the general trend toward a higher value held by

these teachers for the role of  art in their teaching.  There was

a big increase with the addition of the SAAA program and a

slight decline predicted to follow the  end of the program.
