Animal Desert Mask / Snake

The SAAA project is experiencing the expertise of two visual artist, Susan Corl and Alex Jones. They are both practicing professional artists. Corl is a visual folk artists and an experienced teaching artist. She has been mentoring Alex Jones, a commercial artist and illustrator. The two of them have been able to deliver extremely diverse and standards based visual art experiences that were integrated into the numerous core curricula.

Project Highlights:

  • · Paper Mâché headpieces integrated to the study of AZ created with instruction by S. Corl
  • · A variety of hand-made books that integrated to multiple core subjects (K – 12) and assisted with learning many concepts instruction by S. Corl
  • · Student made connections to Islamic cultures through creating a variety of authentic artifacts created with instruction by S. Corl
  • · Student designed and executed a border design inspired by Apache baskets that was installed into their new building – created with instruction by S. Corl
  • · Students were introduced to the elements of illustrative drawing created using Arizona Standards with instruction by A. Jones
  • · Paper-Making completed at several sites was integrated into the Social Studies curriculum
  • · Some unique integrated activities at individual sites included: Ukrainian Eggs, Cornhusk Dolls, Picture Quilts, and Weaving various items with cotton with instruction by S. Corl
